Quick Breakkie: Hearty Maple Oatmeal

I’ve been craving more hearty breakfasts in the morning. This means I don’t usually eat lunch until 1:30 or 2:00pm because I’m just not hungry, but I’ve been making these little bowls of Hearty Maple Oatmeal for the LT and me lately.

Hearty Maple Oatmeal


Hearty Maple Oatmeal

1/2 cup oats

1 cup water

1T raw Mesquite Powder

1/2t pumpkin pie spice

1T raisins

1T raw almonds

1t raw agave


Bring the water to a boil and pour over oats.  Mix in remaining ingredients and cover for at least 5 mins.  Enjoy!


*Not totally raw considering the oats, but you could also use another raw, sprouted grain in the oats’ place.  I just used what I had on hand.


About Raw Mesquite:

Mesquite trees flourish in the American southwest and their edible gift is the mesquite pod.  To make powder, the entire mesquite pod is ground, including the protein-rich seed. This produces a meal that is highly nutritious as well as flavorful.    It is high in dietary fiber and protein (about 17% by weight).  Mesquite contains rich quantities of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc and is an excellent source of the amino acid lysine.

Lysine is an essential amino acid. That means it is necessary for human health but the body can’t manufacture it; lysine has to be gotten from food. Lysine is important for proper growth, and it plays an essential role in the production of carnitine, a nutrient responsible for converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine appears to help the body absorb calcium, and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendon, and cartilage.

Most people get enough lysine in their diet, although athletes, vegans who don’t eat beans, and burn patients may need more. Not enough lysine can cause fatigue, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, agitation, bloodshot eyes, slow growth, anemia, and reproductive disorders.
